Dread Perming Method for dreadlocks

Long Dreadlocks (no perming)

Dread Perming Method for making dreadlocks

Dread perming would be the easiest way to have instant dreadlocks. Even if I am personally 100% against this method for dreadlocks, but I have to talk about it. After all, everyone is free to choose the dreading method that they want.
the dreadlocks perming method is mostly done in beauty salons, and it costs around $300 - $400. your hair will be exposed to chemical product that makes is frizzy, then bounded again and retreated with other chemical process to form the dreadlocks.
you will for sure have nice beautiful very well shaped dreadlocks instantly.
Although it is better when it's done by professionals, dread perming can also be done at home. Home perm kit cost around $10 - $20; and give similar results.

Why people do dread perming to have dreadlocks?
mostly people who are not patient and don't want to wait to have natural dreadlocks tend to do the dread perming method. Also some celebrityies and models who want to have the "dreadlocks look" for a special occation or for a photo session sometimes. Or sometimes some people just want to change their looks without being part of the whole dreadlocks culture.

How long does the dread perming take?
the making of dread perming takes about 6 hours. And if done in a beauty salon, you will need  maintenance appointments that take about two hours and costs about $200 every six months.

Dread perming Advantages:
after going out of the salon you will have dreadlocks.
after about six months it looks just like a natural grown dreadlocks
your dreads will have perfect shape and size
works on ALL hair even Asian straight silky

Dread perming Disadvantages:
The most un-natural dreading method
your hair will be exposed to chemical products
Risks if it's not done by professionals
Costs quiet a lot of money

Dreadlocks Journey: Backcombing method

Dreadlocks Journey: Backcombing method

Backcombing method for dreadlocks is also a natural method of dreading IF you don't use any dread wax or product with it.
Backcombing works perfectly on all kind of hair, NO EXCEPTIONS even on very straight and smooth hair.. It's the method that tells that every human can have nice dreadlocks.

How to do the backcoming method?
First thing is that you section your hair in squares, you can choose from big or small depending on the dreads size you want, you may use rubberbands to secure your sections and take them off later.
then using a comb that has teeth close to each other like this one below:

start combing the hair backwards, you begin from to the root of the hair to the end of it.
I have Made a video of me making one dread to my little niece, and I have used the backcombing method, I didn't tighten it enough because she wasn't going to keep it, but in this video you could see how the backcombing dreadlocks are made:

How often should I wash my backcombed dreads??
Just like we said in the neglect method in a previous post. Wash your dreadlocks twice a week and that's fine. It is a good idea if wash your hair less when you first backcomb it to give your newly dreads time to lock, like once a week.
But remember.. Avoid any shampoo that leave residue behind. Make sure you use only natural residue free dread Soap.

Maintaining backcombed dreadlocks?
Just like the neglected dreadlocks method, in backcoming.. you don't have to do much, Just separating the dreads and washing your hair. And some palmrolling sometimes
You may also Moisturize your dreadlocks sometimes to avoid dryness, it helps keeping your hair healthy.

Advantages of dreadlocks backcombing method:
while backcombing, you control the size of your dreads.
they mature faster than other methods.
backcombing works on all kind of hair especially straight caucasion and asian hair.
It's almost an all natural method.

Disadvantages of dreadlocks backcombing method:
The backcombing process takes few hours.
Need someone to help you. it hurts sometimes.
You may lose some hair in the process.

Dreadlocks Journey: five Methods how to make dreadlocks

DREADLOCKS JOURNEY | HOW TO MAKE DREADLOCKS?:

Or Wich Dreadlocks Method to choose?

So your hair is long enough now to start your dreadlocks journey?.. The next step is to choose the dreading method, depending on your hair type, and the patience degree you have.
here are the different Dreading methods that exist, with advantage and disadvantage of each one. I will post an article on each method to explain in details and with videos.

1-NEGLECT METHOD:
How to do the neglect method: You don't do anything actually except washing your hair, you let it grow naturally. With time, after a year or so it will start to knot and dreads on itself, you might help it by ripping the dreads while they are growing or using rubber bands to define the sections, but the true nectlect people don't do all this.
Advantages: easy to do, no tools or products needed, no assisstance or help; It's the healthiest way to have healthy dreadlocks. No hair damages.
Disadvantages: Takes a lot of time, at least a year before the dreads start forming, or more if your hair is smooth and straight. dreads are not all of the same size, some are fat others are skinny, needs a lot of patience. read more details in this post: http://dreadlocksjourneyblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/dreadlocks-journey-neglect-method.html

2-BACKCOMBING METHOD:
How to do the backcoming method: Section your hair in squares, big or small depending on the dreads size you want, start combing the hair backwards using a dread comb, you begin from to the root of the hair to the end of it; You may use rubberbands to secure your dreads and take them off later.
Advantages: you control the size of your dreads. they mature faster than other methods. it works on all kind of hair especially straight caucasion hair. It's almost an all natural method.
Disadvantages: Takes few hours to make it. Need someone to help you. it hurts sometimes. you may lose some hair in the process.
read more details in this post: http://dreadlocksjourneyblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/dreadlocks-journey-backcombing-method.html

3-TWIST AND RIP METHOD:
How to do the twist and rip method: Section your hair in squares (depending on the size you want for your dreads). Split the sectioned part in two, hold each part in one hand, then twist clockwise, change the hands and spread the sectioned part till it get's tight by the root, repeat till you reach ther end of hair. you might do some palmrolling after.
Advantages: You control the size of your dreads. it's almost an all natural method (unless you use wax). your dreads look like real dreads the same day.
Disadvantages: doesn't work well for straight smooth hair. you may lose a little bit hair in the process. may take time doing it and might hurt a little bit aswell. Read more details in this post: http://dreadlocksjourneyblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/dreadlocks-twist-and-rip-method.html

4-DREAD PERMING METHOD:
How to do the perming method: Go to a salon that does it, and pay them to do it.
Advantages: after going out of the salon you will have dreadlocks instantly.
Disadvantages: It's a chemical process. Must be done by proffessionals. It damages the hair so.. don't do it ;) Read more details in this post: http://dreadlocksjourneyblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/dread-perming-method-for-dreadlocks.html

5-WOOL METHOD:
How to do the Wool dread method: Take a wool thing (sweater, hat or gloves) put it on your hair and rub it in circles for few minutes till you feel knots starting to form. You may rip it apart later to separately form your dreads.
Advantages: All natural method, no help needed, no tools (except wool hat).
Disadvantages: It hurts a lot. takes a lot of time till you start to see dreads(you'll have a messy hair or at least a year). May damage a little bit of your hair if you're not carefull.

Dreadlocks Journey: 6 Important questions to ask Before Starting

Dreadlocks Journey: Before Starting your journey

Now before you start your wonderful dreadlocks journey (and yes it will be wonderful I am sure). there are few things you need to know. As in starting any project in life, the first thing you do is collecting information.
Or let's say that there are few questions you need to ask yourself and find the good answers.

1-What does dreadlocks mean?
wikipedia says: "Dreadlocks, also called locks, dreads, or Jata (Hindi), are matted coils of hair." I wrote a full post about what you need to know about dreadlocks here.

2-What is the word "dreadlocks" to me?
is it just a different hairstyle or haircut that you fancy trying? is it just the look of the natty dreads that attracts you? or are you a real dreadhead willing to start a true wonderful dreadlocks journey?

3-Am I able to have dreadlocks with my hair type?
Dreadlocks are for everyone from all races, regardless to your hair type. you don't have to be a black African to have dreads like many people think. But still you have to know everything about your hair, your hair texture, your hair strenght... that will help you a lot in choosing what dreading method to use.

4-Wich dreadlocks method will work best for me?
As I said it depends a lot on your hair type, if your hair is not strong enough, some methods may damage your hair a little bit.
read about all the methods to make dreadlocks in this post:
http://dreadlocksjourneyblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/dreadlocks-journey-five-methods-how-to.html

5-Dreadlocks products??
You can find some here and there. But a personal advice I give you "NO".
stick to natural stuff, if you want to have beautiful healthy dreadlocks avoid using any non-natural product.

6-Am I patient enough?
It's not gonna be easy, it takes time, so you must be very patient, don't give up. Everytime you feel like you're gonna give up on your dreadlocks journey, think about the result, picture yourself with nice long dreadlocks, browse the net and see other people's dreadlock journeys, it will motivate you.
